Racehorses

Racehorses include horse breeds selected for speed, endurance, responsiveness and athletic performance. They play a major role in equestrian sport, especially in flat racing, trotting races and endurance events depending on their type and aptitudes.

Understanding racehorses

Racehorses are generally distinguished by their athletic build, impulsion, speed and ability to sustain intense effort. Depending on the breed, they may be specialized in flat racing, trotting races, endurance or other demanding sporting disciplines.

Their selection was shaped by specific performance criteria such as speed, stamina, recovery, balance and quality of movement. Some breeds were developed for explosive speed over short distances, while others were bred for endurance or consistency.

Today, racing horse breeds still hold an important place in the equestrian world. They are present in competition, sport horse breeding, certain leisure sport disciplines and in the history of major bloodlines associated with performance.
